Blighter, a UK-based designer and manufacturer of electronic scanning array (ESA) radars, has signed an exclusive Value-Added Reseller (VAR) agreement with JoongAng Advanced Materials, a South Korean supplier of industrial solutions and AI integrator. The deal covers support and maintenance for Blighter's existing military radar installations on the Korean peninsula, including more than 100 Blighter radars deployed by the Korean Army along the 240 km Demilitarised Zone (DMZ). The partnership aims to expand sales of Blighter's radars across East Asia, targeting growing demand for counter-drone (CUAS) solutions, border surveillance, and protection of coastal solar and wind farms, ports, and critical national infrastructure sites.
What the partnership entails
Under the agreement, JoongAng Advanced Materials will provide after-sales support and maintenance for Blighter's existing radars in the region. The company will also integrate its AI analytics expertise—established in the railway safety systems market—into the Blighter ecosystem. Specifically, JoongAng Advanced Materials' AI agent will plug directly into the BlighterNexus processing hub to enhance target classification and radar automation functions. Blighter's solid-state radars already use AI-driven processing to detect, classify, and track people, vehicles, vessels, and near-ground airborne threats at ranges of up to 32 km.
Market context
Blighter radars have been deployed in more than 40 countries, supporting defence, homeland security, critical national infrastructure, and energy sectors. The company's commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) portfolio includes 2D, 3D, and 4D radars, supported by software for configuration, control, and multi-sensor visualisation. The radars feature Low-Probability-of-Intercept (LPI) waveforms, making them inherently covert and suitable for fixed or mobile deployment.
JoongAng Advanced Materials (KOSDAQ:051980) was established in 1999 and is headquartered in Anyang-si, South Korea. The company serves customers in railways, defence, and public safety sectors and continues to invest in AI-based product development.
Tradeoffs
The partnership gives Blighter a dedicated local partner for maintenance and support, which is critical for military-grade systems. However, exclusivity means Blighter's sales in the region depend entirely on JoongAng Advanced Materials' performance. The AI integration could improve target classification accuracy for the local environment, but the effectiveness of the AI agent in real-world conditions remains to be demonstrated.
Bottom line
Blighter gains a foothold in a strategically important market with a partner that has existing relationships in defence and public safety. The AI integration component is a differentiator, but the core value of the deal is the maintenance and support infrastructure for the 100+ radars already deployed along the DMZ, plus the potential for new sales in the growing CUAS and critical infrastructure protection segments.
