Anthropic has increased usage limits for its Claude Code assistant and Claude API while securing a major compute partnership with SpaceX. The changes, effective immediately, target power users and enterprise customers with expanded capacity and relaxed restrictions.
Overview
Three key changes improve access for Claude’s most active users:
- Rate limit doubling: Claude Code’s five-hour rate limits are now twice as high for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans.
- Peak-hour removal: Pro and Max accounts no longer face reduced limits during high-traffic periods.
- API rate limit increases: Claude Opus models see significantly higher API rate limits, with exact values detailed in Anthropic’s updated table.
Compute expansion
The rate limit increases follow a new agreement with SpaceX to utilize the full capacity of the Colossus 1 data center, adding over 300 megawatts (220,000+ NVIDIA GPUs) within a month. This capacity will directly support Claude Pro and Max subscribers. The deal complements other recent compute investments:
- Amazon: Up to 5 GW, including nearly 1 GW by the end of 2026.
- Google and Broadcom: 5 GW, coming online in 2027.
- Microsoft and NVIDIA: $30 billion in Azure capacity.
- Fluidstack: $50 billion investment in U.S. AI infrastructure.
Anthropic also expressed interest in collaborating with SpaceX on orbital AI compute capacity, though no timeline or specifics were provided.
International and enterprise focus
To meet compliance and data residency demands, Anthropic is expanding infrastructure in Asia and Europe through its Amazon partnership. New capacity will prioritize regions with stable legal frameworks and secure supply chains. The company is also exploring ways to offset electricity price increases for local communities hosting its data centers, extending a U.S. commitment internationally.
Additional updates
Alongside the compute and rate limit changes, Anthropic announced:
- Ten new Cowork and Claude Code plugins for financial services and insurance, including Microsoft 365 integrations and an MCP app.
- A new enterprise AI services company backed by Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs.
Tradeoffs
While the rate limit increases benefit power users, they do not apply to free-tier accounts. The compute expansion focuses on enterprise and regulated industries, leaving consumer-facing improvements unaddressed. International expansion may also introduce latency or compliance complexities for global teams.
Bottom line
The updates prioritize Claude’s most dedicated users with higher limits and expanded compute, while laying groundwork for future enterprise and international growth. Developers and organizations relying on Claude Code or the API should review the new rate limits to assess potential workflow improvements.
